SKIL is known for their range of power tools, especially circular saws, and drills.
A few years ago SKIL redefined their image to target the professional and contractor market for some of their products.
In doing so, they released a contractor-specific saw. However, the SKIL 3410-02 is one they’ve targeted to the budget-conscious woodworker.
No time to read the 3410-02 review? Here’s a summary of the SKIL 3410-02 table saw review:
- Excellent Budget Compact Table Saw
- EZ View Measurement System 24-1/2-inch Rip Capacity
- A Robust Direct-Drive 15-Amp Motor
- Heavy-Duty Steel Stand and Quick-Mount System
- A 10-inch Blade that Spins at 5,000 RPM (No Load)
Although the SKIL 3410-02 comes with a stand, it’s not aimed at the contractor. It’s in fact positioned for a DIY woodworker who’d like to build their own project ideas.
When you look through the many portable/ compact saws available, they would usually have limitations. Especially when it comes to the size of table space and power to cut through larger materials.
However, would this be different for the 3410-02?
Well, let’s hope not because the price the unit allows for many others to get involved in the woodworking scene.
So, let’s dive in and see how the SKIL 3410-02 stacks up.
It may be the right budget portable saw for you.
Features & Specifications
The product dimensions of the SKIL is 28.9 x 20.9 x 13 inches and provides a 20 x 26-inch cast aluminum table.
There’s onboard storage to house all necessary attachments for quick access. Getting that blade wrench won’t be hard.
The 3410-02 packs plenty of power for the casual user. It features a 15-amp direct-drive motor that will rip through most small-medium size pieces of material. It also has a no-load 5,000 RPM rating.
However, trying to rip large pieces may place too much load on the motor. Torque would be reduced in the process. You don’t want to overload the motor – it would be one way to reduce its life.
Just be mindful this unit is not targeted for use at a job site. You’ll need another table saw to rip through that 3-inch hardwood such as the Bosch 4100-10.
Blade & Rip Capacity
As with most table saws, the SKIL comes with a 10-inch carbide-tooth blade.
The standard blade is designed for ripping lumber, however, you’re able to purchase other blades if you want to make other types of cuts.
The table extension allows you to open it up for a maximum rip capacity of 24-½-inch. The 3-½-inch cut-depth can cut through 4x material in one pass which would be more than enough for most DIY users.
The blade height and bevel angle of the blade are controlled by a single handle. This can become tricky when you want to make precise cuts. Separate handles generally only appear on higher-end cabinet saw models.
Lacking Dust Collection?
Unfortunately, one of the features missing from the 3410-02 saw is the dust collection port.
You may have noticed that I’m a stickler for safety, but also for a clean workspace.
Without having the ability to connect a shop vac to the SKIL is a shortcoming. Sawdust will be dispersed everywhere and will make for a frustrating job after you’ve finished.
This has obviously been left out to ensure a cheaper price point. For the price that it’s at, to be honest, it’s something I can’t complain about really.
However, if you do have some cash spare, I’d recommend the DEWALT DWE7480 or Bosch 4100-10 if such a feature is required. You’ll also be able to do a lot more with the saw with the added accuracy and rip power.
- 10-inch table saw
- Carbide-tooth blade
- 2x Blade wrenches
- Heavy-duty steel folding stand
- Self-aligning rip fence
- Miter gauge
What Sets It Apart From The Competition
Here’s why I’d recommend the SKIL 3410-02, but also be aware of features to look out for.
EZ View Measurement System
The rip fence with EZ View Measurement System, in theory, is a great idea. You set the alignment and ensure the material is square up against the fence. Here, it supposedly aligns itself to make your job easy
However, it’s been reported by many users that this doesn’t work as well as intended.
Most complain that they can’t get it to sit square. You, in fact, have to push the far end of the material away from the blade as much as possible before locking it into place. If you don’t, the saw struggles and nudges the rip fence causing it to adjust your settings.
This can be frustrating considering that your piece will end up crooked.
It’s not something that would put me off from purchasing this saw, but something to be aware of when you’re looking into budget portable saws.
The quick-mount system allows for quick and easy setup.
The unit comes with a foldable heavy-duty steel stand for stable positioning. Unfortunately, it doesn’t come with wheels so it does make it quite a chore if you require constant mobility.
The stand is remarkably well-engineered and sturdy. Users have noted the dual toggle and twin tab method to mount the saw is cleverly done.
Assisting any DIYer in the easy-to-use department has the stamp of approval from me.
The SKIL also comes with a blade guard, riving knife and anti-kickback pawls.
In fact, many portable table saws these days are starting to incorporate these safety features. I think it’s a great idea considering more and more DIY and hobbyists are getting involved.
The guard features an easy and quick disconnect mechanism so you can attach/ detach the unit in a matter of seconds.
The three-piece safety device does have its drawbacks, however. The riving knife isn’t adjustable around the blade. So for any non-through cuts, you have to remove it.
To be honest, this is a minor hiccup.
NOTE: Be sure to re-attach the unit again to ensure your safety when operating the saw.
The SKIL 3410-02 portable table saw is one for the budget-conscious.
It’s an excellent saw for the price point that will suffice for any DIY or hobbyist.
If you want to carry out any woodworking projects, the power the unit presents will be a good fit.
You can’t expect everything at this price-point. Overall, the unit is a great buy for anyone wanting to enter the woodworking arena on a budget.
