Differing prices, features and countless additional components can confuse even the most experienced woodworkers, yet luckily – there is an option which covers all of these without confusing its’ users, and that is the SKIL 3386-01 bandsaw.

Before we advance any further, it’s good to clarify – what exactly is a bandsaw, and why would you need one? Well, a bandsaw is similar to a scroll saw, with its ability to carve interesting patterns and a focus on its precision. However, the similarities stop here – a bandsaw is more powerful than its scroll saw cousin, and can be used to cut a vast array of materials.

Bandsaws are identified by their design – a blade which is powered by a motor, which travels through wheels, exposing the blade which is used to make cuts.

Specifications & Features

To kick this article off, we’ll be firstly looking at the specifications and features of the SKIL 3386-01. We’ve outlined the main specs, as well as three of the basic features that this bandsaw includes.

This isn’t the last of the features, also, as we have picked three features which make the 3386-01 truly special later in the article.

With that being said, let’s get into the fun stuff.

  • 2.5 Amp motor
  • Cut depth of 3-⅛”
  • Ribbed aluminum table with tilt adjustment between 0 and 45 degrees
  • Total table size of 11-13/16” with a throat depth of 9”
  • Inclusive 1-½” dust port for removing unwanted debris

Table & Throat Size

Skil have included within their overall bandsaw design, a ribbed aluminum table. This is perfect for any materials you would think of cutting, including wood and metal to name two popular examples.

Not only is it perfect for most materials, but the makeup of the table results in a bandsaw that has minimal to no vibration – which is extremely helpful when cutting.

The table is fairly adequate for all cutting applications, with the dimensions of 11-13/16” and a throat size of 9”.

It’s not the largest you’ll be able to find within the benchtop bandsaw range, yet it’s a solid size for the majority of projects you’d be looking to feed it with.

The table also includes a very helpful feature which can widen your cutting techniques, and that is the title adjustment option.

This allows the table to tilt between 0 and 45 degrees – meaning the blade is able to cut through the material in a completely different manner.

Dust Port & Lamp

If you’re not able to see, how are you able to cut?

It’s a simple thought, yet it’s something a majority of us have taken for granted when using power tools – until you fall victim to this issue.

Thankfully for all users, SKIL have included a dust port and lamp which aid in both visibility and cleanliness.
The lamp is flexible, so you’re able to illuminate any dark workspaces by utilising this option – by pointing it towards the different directions of your project.

Of course, we don’t need to explain how this improves your visibility – and SKIL have made sure any setting can be worked in with this addition.

On the subject of visibility and more so cleanliness – we have the included dust port.

Sized at 1 ½”, the dust port will clean any debris and dust which can occur through metal and woodworking – giving you a cleaner workspace, and reducing the hassle of cleaning after you’ve finished.

You can simply attach a shop vacuum to the port, and any dust created from sawing will be sucked up for you.

Of course, we couldn’t continue through this article without mentioning one of the most important features of the bandsaw, could we?

The motor is essentially the heart and brain of the bandsaw, and with a tool capable of such power, the motor would have to reflect this.

You won’t be disappointed with the motor on this bandsaw, which is an impressive 2.5 amp in specs – which is able to rip through most materials, even thicker pieces of wood – without struggling.

The motor has one speed setting, and unfortunately the bandsaw is not fitted with a variable speed option, which can give the user complete control over their speeds and cuts they’re making.

Yet, many customers who have purchased the 3386-01 have stated that the motor is sufficiently quick enough to cut materials with its’ single speed setting – which is a great bonus.

What’s Included?

  • 1 x SKIL 3386-01 Bandsaw
  • 1 x flexible work light
  • 1 x blade
  • 1 x parallel guide
  • 1 x miter gauge
  • 1 x hex key

What Separates This Bandsaw From The Rest Of The Pack?

The 3386-01 is a bandsaw which is rich within its’ core features, however doesn’t stray far from the path in regards to extra features that it contains.

Sometimes, the added features and inclusive components can create some confusion for users, especially those who are just beginning their craftsmanship journey.

For this reason, SKIL haven’t added too many extras, instead focusing upon the features which are found universally throughout bandsaws  – both corded and cordless – so no one gets left behind, regardless of how long they’ve been in the game for.

We look at some of these features that SKIL have included below.

Blade Guide Adjustment

With a cutting depth of 3-⅛”, the 3386-01 is fairly standard in this comparison when listed against competitor bandsaws on the market. One thing it has over its’ competitors, however – is the ability to adjust the depth to a customized setting of yours.

There opens up a world of possibilities for your projects, and has the ability to enhance your cutting skills, giving you complete control over every cut, angle and depth you can work with.

Rack & Pinion Table

The rack and pinion table which is built into this bandsaw is great for a number of reasons, all of which are purely linked to increasing both your skills and your quality of work.

The rack and pinion table adjustment options are those which are commonly found in one of the most popular saws, the table saw.

You’re able to adjust the height and angle that you’re working within, thanks to the rack and pinion table which are both completely adjustable, giving you much more versatility within your pieces.

Such versatility is made within cuts such as stack cuts which is often reserved for a jigsaw or scroll saw.

Effectively, SKIL are giving you more than the one saw in terms of operation – which gives you a wider array of projects, cuts and materials to work with.

Rip Fence

If you’ve used alternative saws in the past, you’ll know exactly how convenient and helpful a rip fence is.

If you’re not too familiar with the rip fence, it’s the bar/fence which runs parallel to the blade.

The main job of the rip fence is to provide leverage for accuracy, allowing you to make cuts which are both accurate and extremely straight.

There’s nothing worse to cut through material, to realize it wasn’t within the measurements you had outlined thanks to a crooked line. The rip fence on the 3386-01 effectively eliminates this troublesome issue – giving you assurance within your work

And that’s exactly what you’d want, isn’t it?

Final Thoughts

After reading through this article, you should now have a good understanding of how the SKIL 3386-01 works, and whether or not it fits the needs you’re looking for in a bandsaw.

If you’re looking for an option that won’t break the budget, and it quite straightforward to use out of the box, the 3386-01 is the bandsaw you’re looking for.

With its’ rigid build and design – to the powerful motor and adjustable rack and pinion table, there are many ticks of approval from me when comparing to alternative bandsaws.

It’s best to see what you’re looking for and what you can justify spending – yet this is a purchase you definitely wouldn’t regret.

What do you think though, is this bandsaw one of your favorites?
