8 Best Cordless Reciprocating Saws (With Good Battery Life)

A reciprocating saw can be a handy and effective tool, but in my opinion, it’s always best when you have a cordless version to get into those awkward spots. To me, there is something about a cord that can become quite annoying at times, so I often feel it’s best to remove it where possible.

A reciprocating saw can make short work of trimming branches and other small brushwood around both your yard and in specific DIY projects. However, I know the market is crammed full of possibilities, which is a problem.

But I don’t want you to find yourself stressing out about the sheer number of options available. That’s just not healthy, and it’s also not required.

Instead, I need to tell you that I am here to help make your decision much more straightforward.

I’ve taken all of my experience with power tools and sought to identify the best cordless reciprocating saws on the market right now. However, I’ve not simply taken eight tools I’ve found online and concluded they are the best.

Instead, there’s a bit more to it than that.

Oh, and after I’ve told you all about my list, I’m going to provide you with several tips that I feel will make a massive difference in how you make your decision regarding the perfect reciprocating saw.

How I Made My List

When making my list, I had some requirements in mind that each cordless reciprocating saw would need to meet to qualify. You see, I’m all about giving opinions on tools that I know will be capable of coping with a lot of punishment without simply falling apart at the earliest opportunity.

In this instance, I focused on several key areas.

I wanted that reliability and for each tool to feel robust. I want you to feel you can throw almost anything at the tool, and it will still work.

Also, I want something with good battery life. There’s no point in owning any cordless tool where the battery dies instantly.

Add in a good blade, ease of use, and the opinion of people who have already gone out and bought the model, and what you get is a perfectly reasonable picture of what it’s like to own each saw.

Ultimately, I was left with these eight cordless reciprocating saws, and I know they will perform to the standards you expect of them.

Before we dive into in-depth reviews of all 8 Cordless Reciprocating Saws on the list, here are my top 3 picks:

Best Overall Cordless Reciprocating Saw – DeWalt DCS367B

DEWALT 20V MAX* XR Reciprocating Saw, Compact, Tool Only (DCS367B), Black

  • Power: 20V
  • Speed: 0 – 2,900 SPM
  • Weight: 5.4 lbs
  • Stroke Length: 1 ⅛”

DeWalt tools always manage to hit the mark, in my opinion, and this particular reciprocating saw is no different. It comes with a 20V battery and offers variable speeds up to a maximum of 2,900 SPM. I see this as perfectly fine regarding speed, but that’s not what I love most about this model.

Instead, what I love is the fact the motor is brushless. A brushless motor is known for being far more efficient and effective. It also reduces the chances of the motor burning out and requiring maintenance on a regular basis. That means you can use this reciprocating saw for an extended time without worrying about it letting you down.

But that’s not all.

I find this saw to be relatively light at 5.4 lbs. You will undoubtedly find heavier models on the market, so this is not a problem. It also comes with quick-change blade releases, and I prefer when you don’t feel as if your fingers are getting in a knot just when changing the blade.

Overall, this reciprocating saw is robust and easy to use, and you will find you can always remain in control.

Pros

  • It’s very well made
  • It’s easy to use
  • You can change blades in an instant
  • The variable speed trigger makes a difference
  • It has an LED light to help you see things

Cons

  • You will often only see the tool and need to buy the blades
  • DEWALT 20V reciprocating saw.
  • Compact 14.5-inch length fits.
  • 1-1/8-inch stroke length.

Best Heavy-Duty – Milwaukee 2720-21 M18 Fuel Sawzall

Milwaukee 2720-21 M18 Fuel Sawzall Reciprocating Saw Kit

  • Power: 18V battery
  • Speed: 3,000 SPM
  • Weight: 8.9 lbs
  • Stroke Length: 1 ⅛”

If you know in advance that your reciprocating saw is in line for some heavy-duty use, then I suggest checking out the Milwaukee M18 Fuel Sawzall. This is one serious reciprocating saw, and it does pack a punch, which will become evident when you fire it up for the first time.

I love the sense of both power and durability that comes with this model. It screams out that it means business, and you feel you can tackle the world with this reciprocating saw.

From the perspective of the motor, it’s clear that the battery itself is exceptional. Milwaukee claims it lasts for double the length of time compared to other reciprocating saws with an 18V battery, and if that’s true, then it makes a difference.

But staying with the motor, I know people worry about overloading and burning it out. Thankfully, that’s not going to be the case here.

This model comes with the Milwaukee total system communication, and that’s where the tool itself monitors things to ensure you don’t overload it. I love this fact because I know how easy it is to get absorbed in what you do, so you have some protection here.

Overall, considering it has an average stroke length and is also slightly heavier than some models, I have included it because it is so rugged.

Pros

  • It has an impressive motor
  • You can vary the speed up to 3,000 SPM
  • It has an easy to use pivot shoe
  • It has overload protection built into the tool
  • It’s very sturdy and rugged

Cons

  • It is heavier than several models on the market
  • Delivers the fastest cutting speed in its Class .
  • Brushless motor.
  • Intelligence.

Best One-Handed – Milwaukee 2719-20 M18 Hackzall Reciprocating Saw

Milwaukee 2719-20 M18 FUEL Hackzall (Bare Tool), Red, Black,

  • Power: 5 Amp
  • Speed: 3,000 SPM
  • Weight: 4.59 lbs
  • Stroke Length: ⅞”

I love the Milwaukee M18 Hackzall model simply because it’s a tool you can use with just one hand. I love how it’s so light and easy to use that it frees up your other hand for clearing things out of the way.

This model still comes with an 18V battery delivering 5 Amp and a maximum speed of 3,000 SPM. That means this model is not short of power, so the fact you can use it with just one hand is impressive.

But this model is more compact than you may be used to, and that is why the stroke length is slightly shorter at 7.8”. Often, the stroke length for larger reciprocating saws will start at around 1 ⅛”, and that is a reasonable difference.

I also like how it still incorporates the Milwaukee RedLink Plus Intelligence system. It means this brushless motor cannot be overloaded, and you won’t just burn it out thanks to overusing the tool.

Overall, this tool feels well balanced in your hand, is easy to use, and still delivers results even though it doesn’t require you to hold on with both hands.

Pros

  • You still feel in complete control with one hand
  • It comes with a tremendous amount of power
  • You can get speeds of up to 3,000 SPM
  • It contains their RedLink Plus Intelligence system
  • It feels well balanced in your hand

Cons

  • The shorter stroke length does mean your options are reduced with various projects
  • POWERSTATE Brushless Motor.
  • REDLINK Plus Intelligence.
  • REDLITHIUM battery technology.

BLACK+DECKER 20V MAX* Cordless Reciprocating Saw Kit (BDCR20C)

  • Power: 20V
  • Speed: 3,000 SPM
  • Weight: 4.5 lbs
  • Stroke Length: ⅞”

I know some people can feel put off purchasing a cordless reciprocating saw due to the price, so I have a budget-friendly option here: the Black & Decker BDCR20C. I think this model packs so much into the tool without costing too much, and it still comes with a 20V battery and produces a maximum speed of 3,000 SPM.

I admit the stroke length with this model is slightly less than most people want as it measures in at ⅞”. However, if you know the limitations in advance, I don’t see it as much of a problem.

This model also comes with tool-less blade changing and a pivot shoe that is very easy to adjust. However, one thing I like is the electric brake that is also on this model. It does mean it stops instantly, and you feel as if you have absolute control over the tool.

Overall, I think this model does a fantastic job. It certainly doesn’t come across as a budget saw when you fire it up and see what it’s capable of doing.

Pros

  • It packs a whole lot of power in the saw
  • It has a variable trigger to change the speed
  • The electric brake is a great addition
  • It comes with tool-less blade changing

  • Speed: 2,800 SPM
  • Weight: 8.3lbs

If you have never used a reciprocating saw before, then you want something capable of performing but also easy to use. Step forward this model by Makita.

It has an 18V battery capable of pushing this reciprocating saw to a maximum speed of 2,800 SPM. This speed is also variable, so you get absolute control over the saw when in use, and I love that fact.

I also like how this model is compact in size as the entire tool measures only some 19 ⅛”, and it weighs just over 8lbs even with the battery. I find that to be pretty cool, and it should mean you don’t suffer from fatigue if you need to use this saw for a prolonged period.

  • Power: 20V
  • Speed: 3,000 SPM
  • Weight: 6lbs
  • Stroke Length: ¾”

If you want to combine two completely different tools into one, then this is the model I suggest. What WORX has managed to do here is to combine both a reciprocating saw and a jigsaw, and even though they are not the only ones to achieve this, I feel their model is the best.

It comes with a 20V battery, so power is not a problem. Also, the saw part works at speeds of up to 3,000 SPM, which will make quick work of so many projects.

If you wonder how it moves between both tools, then the answer is that it does so in seconds. It actually works via a pivot design, and I find it very easy to operate without being too cumbersome. Also, both tools work well independently, and it’s just cool having both versions.

Changing blades will also prove to be easy, and a dust blower is built in, making it easier for you to see what’s going on.

Overall, it’s surprising how well this combination works with a single tool, and I think it’s something you should give some serious consideration to.

Pros

  • It’s an excellent combo tool
  • It has more than enough power with a 20V battery
  • You can vary the speed offering more control
  • Changing between tools is quick and easy
  • You can change blades in an instant

Cons

  • It’s slightly bulkier in nature

Best Compact – DeWalt DCS387B Reciprocating Saw

DEWALT DCS387B 20-volt MAX Compact Reciprocating Saw (Tool Only)

  • Power: 20V
  • Speed: 2,900 SPM
  • Weight: 5.4 lbs
  • Stroke Length: 1 ⅛”

One pet hate of mine is when you need to complete a job, and the tool you have is too big. So, if you feel you may need more of a compact reciprocating saw, then the DeWalt DCS387B is the tool for you.

This tool is relatively light at only 5.4 lbs, and that lack of weight makes it easier to go ahead and use the tool for an extended time without feeling exhausted. The model comes with a 20V battery and a variable speed of anywhere from 0 to 2,900 SPM.

I find the variable speed option straightforward to use, giving you a feeling of absolute precision. Also, I do appreciate the fact that most blades will fit this saw. It means you have options regarding the blades, which is a real bonus.

The model has keyless blade changes in four directions and incorporates a powerful LED light for those darker spots.

Overall, this reciprocating saw may be small, but it’s packed with power.

Pros

  • It’s lightweight and small in size

Best Motor – Makita XRJ05T Reciprocating Saw

Makita XRJ05T 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Brushless Cordless Recipro Saw Kit (5.0Ah)

  • Power: 18V
  • Speed: 3,000 SPM
  • Weight: 8.2 lbs
  • Stroke Length: 1 ¼”

People sometimes worry about the motor on their power tools simply because they fear they will burn out through use. However, this Makita reciprocating saw will have no problem dealing with some heavy-duty work.

It comes with a brushless motor powered by an impressive 18V battery. Also, it offers you some speed variation thanks to being able to move between 2,300 and 3,000 SPM.

But the motor is the part that stands out for me. Being brushless means it won’t burn out so easily, and maintenance is kept to a minimum. In addition, Makita ensures this motor is highly efficient and delivers a constant rate of power, allowing for better end results.

But that’s not the only reason why I love this model.

It also comes with a crank mechanism with the intention of reducing vibration. I feel this works very well, and this will also reduce fatigue in your arms. Furthermore, it has an electric brake as a safety feature, and the soft grip handle feels good in your hands.

Overall, I find this Makita reciprocating saw to be one of the best on the market, but the motor is certainly something that will not let you down.

Pros

  • It does manage to reduce vibrations in what is a very powerful saw
  • Changing blades is easy and quick
  • The brake works well and gives you more security when using the saw
  • The variable speed is very precise

How to Choose a Cordless Reciprocating Saw

using cordless reciprocating saw

If you plan on going ahead and purchasing a cordless reciprocating saw, you may want to pick up on a few tips to aid you in your decision.

To me, there are just a few key areas that I like to think about when it comes to buying a cordless reciprocating saw. So, this is what I suggest.

Power

You want to ensure your cordless reciprocating saw comes with either an 18V or 20V battery. That should lead to it producing enough power to cut through whatever it is you are working on.

Also, only use a battery from the same brand of reciprocating saw. It doesn’t only mean it will work, but it will deliver the best efficiency possible.

Your Project

I’d also suggest considering the types of projects you will most likely be working on with your reciprocating saw. If the projects are more heavy-duty and larger, then I would tell you to focus more on power and speed than anything else.

However, smaller projects can drop the power and speed a bit and also go for a tool with smaller dimensions. The same need for rigidity is just not so important for those smaller projects.

Speed

Speed is important, and I tend to go for tools with a variable speed option wherever possible. I feel they offer more control, and you will come across times with projects where you just need to slow things down.

But when it comes to the top speed, I would always suggest something anywhere from 2,500 SPM to 3,000 SPM. No project should prove too difficult if you have a reciprocating saw within that range.

Weight

You may also want to think about the weight of the tool. There is some variation, and I would suggest thinking about how long you will hold the tool during your projects.

Clearly, the heavier it is, the greater the chance of feeling some fatigue from using the saw, and that’s not something you really want to happen.

Other Features

Other features you may wish to look out for include quick-blade changing and even the use of an LED light. I love when it comes with a light, as you never know when you may find yourself in a position where natural light is hard to come by. At least with this, you don’t have to worry about it, as the reciprocating saw is there to help you out.

Overall though, I would suggest focusing on the power and the projects you intend to complete with your reciprocating saw. That alone will help point you toward the correct saw for your own individual needs.

Overall Conclusion

The eight cordless reciprocating saws that appear on my list are all exceptional in their own right. I know that each model can perform various tasks and do so with amazing results.

But I suggest you check out the tips on choosing the perfect reciprocating saw before making your decision. I aim to make your life a whole lot easier, and I believe you will have no problem selecting a model from my list.

Ultimately, a cordless reciprocating saw can speed up a number of projects, whether it be by some demo work or cleaning up things around your yard.
