DeWalt DCS371B Compact Bandsaw Review

DeWalt have an impressively large selection of power tools for both professional and amateur use, which gives consumers a lot of choice when selecting a new addition to their workshop.

If you don’t have too much time on your hands, though – that’s not a problem at all, we have a quick overview of the DeWalt DCS371B Compact Bandsaw Review here:

  • Weighing only 9.4 lbs and 15” long, the DCS371B is one of the most compact bandsaws available
  • Cutting depth of 2-½” is one of the largest cutting depths across the cordless bandsaw category
  • Centered-handle position allows for evenly balanced tool, reducing both user fatigue and minimizes vibration
  • Is part of DeWalt’s 20V MAX battery sharing platform, with over 200+ tools to interchange batteries between
  • Blade tracking adjustment features allows for constant monitoring of blade use, prolonging both blade and tool

With bandsaws, it’s no different, with DeWalt having their hands in the compact bandsaw market to add to their power-tool catalog.

What exactly is a bandsaw, though? With many saws available, it can be confusing at the best of times. Well, a bandsaw is similar to a scroll saw, with its ability to carve interesting patterns and a focus on its precision. However, the similarities stop here – a bandsaw is more powerful than its scroll saw cousin, and can be used to cut a vast array of materials.

Bandsaws are identified by their design – a blade which is powered by a motor, which travels through wheels, exposing the blade which is used to make cuts.

Now that we’ve touched upon what a bandsaw does and why you’d use one, let’s get into the article.

Specifications & Features

To make it a little easier for you, I’ve hand-picked three features which I believe are incredibly important to this model overall, as well as some special additional features later in the article.

We’ll start off with the specifications of the DCS371B model below:

Specifications

  • 2-½” cutting capacity
  • Centered handle position which reduced user fatigue, increasing comfort through balance weighted throughout tool
  • Tool-free lever which loosens the blade tension to allow for blade changes
  • LED light with 20-second delay, illuminating the darkest of work spaces
  • Dual-bearing blade guide rollers which provide both flexibility and comfort for users

Battery & Cut Capacity

First thing you may notice, is that this DeWalt compact bandsaw model is part of the 20V Max battery platform.

Simply put, there are over 200+ tools in which the battery is compatible with (all DeWalt, of course), and can seriously save you some money when you’re looking to add more tools into your inventory.

The 20V MAX battery has a runtime of up to 8x than that of standard batteries, and with the ability to share between the ever-increasing 20V MAX battery platform DeWalt has – it’s definitely a good feature to have in mind across your tool

DeWalt have also included a solid, 2-½” cutting capacity in the DCS371B model, also. The good thing about this is that it ranks highly as one of the deepest cutting capacities available in compact bandsaws.

This means that you’ll be able to cut through conduit, certain tubing, angled rods and also pvc piping, to name a few examples.

Perfect for any contractor needing a powerful and compact bandsaw.

Dual Bearing Blade Guide Rollers

Secondly, we have the dual-bearing blade guide rollers.

One of the standout functions that these provide is the increased durability in the overall blade support system of the DCS371B.

This will protect both the blades and material you’re cutting through with this holistic design, which will not only save you money in the future (think broken and bent blades, for example), but also increases the quality of your work.

As a result, you’ll be able to put your hard-earned money towards other tools and products you need to purchase, instead of replacement blades.

That doesn’t sound bad at all, does it?

LED Lighting & Integrated Hook

It’s the little additions which can be so often overlooked that add another dimension into the way you use your power tools – and this is the same here with DeWalt’s DCS371B compact bandsaw.

The LED light included within this bandsaw will illuminate your workspace when it’s on, providing a brighter setting to carry out your projects, regardless of environments.

The LED light has an afterglow for an additional twenty seconds once switched off, and unlike other tools with lighting functions, does not have a lit line of sight. This is small function to be removed, yet is compensated for the amount of light in which the LED can provide.

Once you’ve finished your work, you can simply store the DCS371B using the integrated hang hook (which is found on the model itself), and not have to worry about any damages to the bandsaw itself – all thanks to this simple little solution.

Not a bad addition at all, is it?

What’s In The Box?

DeWalt have marketed this compact bandsaw as a bare tool model, however out of the box you’ll receive:

  • 1 x DCS371  bandsaw
  • 1 x 14/18 TPI blade
  • 1 x blade tracking wrench

What Makes The DCS371B Different From The Rest?

So, we’ve had a look in length at three standard features of the DCS371B – but now it’s time to have a look into the features that really make this compact bandsaw stand out above the back.

Let’s get this started by looking at the blade tracking adjustment feature.

Blade Tracking Adjustment

A very useful feature, the blade tracking adjustment allows for increased blade tracking – which allows you to monitor the wear and tear of your blade.

This increases the lifespan of the blade, and as can become quite a burden to replace blades through negligence, it’s a great thought that DeWalt have added this.

It’s also incredibly accurate – which is something that many cheaper bandsaws cannot proclaim with their blade adjustment trackers – which gives DeWalt another tick in the approval list for what they’ve added into this model.

Centered-Handle Position For Additional Comfort

With a powerful and hand-held tool, there’s a very high chance you’d be looking for some sort of comfort in order to minimize kickback and eventual fatigue which can creep in through a long session.

DeWalt know that this can occur, so they have included a very comfortable grip within the DCS371B model.

The back handle contains a soft grip which has working ergonomically in mind, providing comfort and also flexibility for you when in use.

The centered-handle position, however – is the real hero of this design, with its’ positioning allowing for a superior, well-balanced design that will dramatically reduce the amount of vibration and fatigue suffered during work.

As the weight is balanced, there are no awkward angles you’ll need to maneuver with – you can easily use the bandsaw how you’re supposed to.

Tool-less Blade & Tension Changes

With their new models of power tools across the wider market, DeWalt have thrown away the need for manual blade changes and replaced them with tool-less blade change functions.

Of course, this varies from tool to tool (location, how it’s clamped, etc), but the DCS371B has this feature localized within a lever – which is extremely difficult to miss with an ‘adjust here’, set of text on one of the blade rollers

Manual changes using a hex or allen key can be time-consuming and also quite annoying at the best of times, and you won’t have to worry about doing so when changing the blades on the DCS371B.

It’s very simple in changing the tension of the blade, also. With the included blade tracking wrench, you can simply adjust the tension your desired setting – giving you complete control over all aspects of your work.

Final Thoughts

After reading through this article, you should now have a better understanding of DeWalt’s DCS371B, and you’ll have a clearer idea if this is the compact bandsaw for you.

One of the better compact bandsaws available on the market, the DCS371B is a durable, powerful and lightweight portable bandsaw that is definitely an option you should be heavily considering if you’re an electrician, to use one example.

It should definitely be a staple in all contractors’ inventory, and also for those who’d be more suited to be using the bandsaw within their own workshop.

At an affordable price, as well as a raft of additional features made purely to make your work a little more easier and accessible for you, it’s clear to see that DeWalt have created a winner here  – however I’ll leave that up to you!

What do you think of the DCS371B, is there a particular feature that you really enjoy?

Or perhaps there’s something I forgot to add?

Whatever that may be, feel free to leave your thoughts and comments below.
