8 Best Electric Pole Saws For Your Garden (By Type)

Last Updated on October 9, 2022 by Barry Gray

Bring out your pole saws, people. Let’s get trimming!

My grandparent’s house had a huge backyard with lots of trees. Every year, I would watch him trim the trees with an old, trusted pole saw. Maybe that is why I find this activity so calming; it reminds me of fond childhood memories.

I have compiled a list of 8 best electric pole saws in this article, so that you may find joy in this activity, too! But let’s first look at the different types of electric pole saws available.

Why Electric Pole Saws?

There are three different types of pole saws: electric, manual, and gas powered. Among these, electric pole saws are powered by electricity and are more affordable and lightweight. Some of them even come with an option to detach the chainsaw and use it by itself.

Electric pole saws are of two different types: corded and cordless. Corded pole saws never run out of power, but you need to keep them connected to an extension cord at all times. Therefore, they are more suitable for small- to medium-sized yards that only need trimming occasionally.

Cordless pole saws, on the other hand, use a rechargeable battery pack. Although they are more portable, they tend to run out of battery quickly. But the advantage is that you can use them anywhere- especially to trim hard-to-reach branches.

Both types have their advantages and disadvantages, so it all comes down to your needs. In this article, I talk about both of them.

Each electric pole saw has some feature that makes it distinguishable from others. So take a look at all of them, and choose the best one based on your needs. Let’s get started!

It is very easy to start- you just have to press a single button, and off it goes! It comes with a brushless motor, which means more power, a longer runtime, and also a cleaner and quieter application. My favorite part is the automatic oiler which keeps the bar and chain appropriately lubricated. This prolongs the life of your tool without you having to spend a lot of time on maintenance.

The oil tank is also translucent so that you can stay on top of your oil levels. This tool is perfect for operation in residential areas!

All you need to do is press a button to start it. It also comes with a safety switch which prevents accidental starting. You can extend the telescoping pole to reach a maximum height of 15 feet! The downside is that it gets quite heavy and hard to handle at its maximum height.

It has an automatic oiler which comes with a small window for you to gauge the oil levels. The non-slip foam grip handle is a nice touch. I also liked the guard which defends you against any falling debris. For safe storage, it comes with a plastic blade cover.

  • Takes 5 seconds for the blade to stop moving after releasing the switch
  • More safety features would have been nice

My Thoughts: This is a pretty useful tool for the average homeowner. It is easy to assemble and use, affordable, and makes trimming very easy. In order to prevent oil leaks, Worx recommends not filling up the oil tank to the brim and also storing the tool horizontally when not in use.

The 20V Max lithium-ion battery is quite powerful and has a good lifespan. Compared to similar NICD batteries, this one retains its charge 5 times more even when idle. In a single charge, you can make up to 100 cuts!

The pole is made out of fiberglass, so it is durable. There is a convenient trigger start as well as a safety lock switch to prevent accidental starting of the machine. The in-line power head allows greater visibility and easy maneuverability.

Now, on to the guide!

How To Choose The Best Electric Pole Saw

using a pole saw

I love electric pole saws because they are an environmentally friendly option. They don’t use any gas, which means a sum total of zero carbon emissions. Here are some things you should check to pick the right electric pole saw for you!

Reach Length

Since electric pole saws are used for trimming trees or cutting off dead branches, they should be able to reach the tops of trees. Most electric pole saws offer a reach of 8 to 10 feet, which should be enough for the average homeowner

If you need more reach, look for ones that offer a telescoping feature. Such electric pole saws will extend your reach for up to 14 or 15 feet. Alternatively, you can buy separate extensions and attach them to your electric pole saw, especially if you are a professional.

Most electric pole saws weigh around 10 pounds and are perfect for people who are used to lifting things of this weight. However, even these will put a strain on your arms and back if you are not used to working with electric pole saws.

Another thing to note is that almost all electric pole saws will have some heft to them when extended to their full height. So, to make it easier to use, pick ones that have features such as a shoulder strap.

The placement of the motor also decides the weight and ease of use. Electric pole saws with a motor attached to the head tend to be top-heavy and difficult to maneuver easily. In my experience, mid-mount motors tend to distribute the weight well and are easier to handle.

The power will determine the cutting capacity of your tool. When it comes to corded electric pole saws, look for ones that have a minimum of 6-8 Amps

For cordless models, a 20V battery power should suffice for some light work. For heavier usage, a 40V to 60V battery will give you a longer runtime as well as more power to cut tough branches.

Blade Length

You need to choose your blade length according to the thickness of the trees in your backyard. As a general rule of thumb, the cutting length capacity of a blade will be 2 inches less than the actual blade length. So a blade with a length of 8 inches will be capable of cutting branches that are 6 inches in diameter.

The common blade length for an electric pole saw is 6 to 8 inches, which should be enough to get the job done. You can also cut double the length of your blade by operating the tool from opposite ends.

Additional Features

For convenience, ease of use, and safety, look for these additional features:

  • Automatic oiler and automatic chain tensioning to help you with easy maintenance.
  • Safety features to prevent accidents.
  • 2-in-1 convertible/ multi-head attachment electric pole saws that make it easier for you to use several tools without buying each of them separately.
  • Ergonomic and durable design.
  • Firm grip and anti-vibration features to reduce muscle fatigue and make the tool comfortable to use.
  • Metal bucking spikes and tree hooks for precision.

We have reached the end of this guide. Which electric pole saw was your favorite? Let me know in the comments below. And, as always, happy trimming!
