If there is one important thing to consider when it comes down to using your chainsaw, it’s safety. By using your chainsaw safely, you’ll minimize the risk of severely injuring yourself. However, it’s not purely down to safe chainsaw use when it comes to protecting yourself.
Leg protection is a factor almost forgotten when it comes to using your chainsaw – but it shouldn’t be. That’s why we’ve created this guide on the best chainsaw chaps available, so you can protect your legs as best as possible when using your chainsaw.
Don’t have enough time to read the entire article at the moment? No problem! We’ve created a quick overview below of the best chainsaw chaps reviewed:
- Husqvarna 587160704 Chainsaw Chaps
- Forester Chainsaw Chainsaw Chaps
- Stihl 0000 886 3202 Chainsaw Chaps
- Husqvarna 531309565 Chainsaw Chaps
- Oregon 563979 Chainsaw Chaps
We’ve made the hard work easy for you, by putting together a review into the five best chainsaw chaps available. These come in different styles, both open-back and full coverage, spanning four different brands, with different budgets in mind.
There can be a lot of lower-quality chaps found online, and when it comes to safety; this is something you shouldn’t be playing with. You should only have the highest quality chaps that will protect you in the horrible situation that an accident occurs.
So read on, we’ve got this covered for you.
Beginning our dive into the best chainsaw chaps available, we have the 587160704 from Husqvarna.
Husqvarna led the chainsaw game in nearly all areas, so it should be no surprise to see the 587160704 topping the list in our review today. The question remains; what makes these chainsaw chaps one of the best when it comes to chainsaw safety?
The 587160704 are made with different materials, creating five layers to protect your legs. PVC coating polyester with a Tek-Warp form these protective layers.
If you find yourself in a dangerous situation where your chainsaw makes contact with these chaps, the material is cut retardant – so will pull apart, clogging your chainsaw – giving you enough time to turn it off. It’s a very useful safety aid, don’t you think?
Of course, these aren’t the only important features of the 587160704 chainsaw chaps. We’ve listed the specs and complete features below, for your convenience:
- 42” Adjustable Waist Size
- Five Layers Of Protection
- 100 Denier Polyester
- PVC Coating
- Tek Warp Protective Layers
- Available In Orange/Gray & Black/Gray
- Felling Wedge/Gear Pocket
- UL Certified
- Cold Water Washable
- 1 x Husqvarna 587160704 Chaps
My Favorite Feature: Multiple Straps
- Three straps will keep the Husqvarna 587160704 Chaps in place, so you won’t worry about them falling off
It’s no good to you if you’ve purchased new chainsaw chaps, only to have them fall off or inconveniently flap around the bottom of your legs. This can prevent a safety issue itself, plus – it just isn’t comfortable.
The 587160704 is fitted with three straps on each leg, so you’ll be able to tighten them to your perfect level of comfortability. As they come in multiple lengths and waist sizes up to 42” – it’s perfect for any shape or size.
The acetyl Delran buckles for these straps are easily accessible on the side of each leg, for quick changes in tightness should you need to adjust. A very handy feature, if you ask me – what are your thoughts on these straps?
These safety chaps are an open-back design, which is the first feature you’ll notice when reviewing which are the best chainsaw chaps for your work. This doesn’t mean they’re lacking in safety, though – it’s quite the opposite.
Due to the open-back design, (which meet ASTM and OSHA regulations), you’ll have a complete range of motion – protecting the most at-risk parts of your body from chainsaw injury.
They are lightweight and are fitted to your existing long pants by the two straps on each leg. As a bonus, the Forester Safety Chaps are water and oil resistant.
What else can you find on the Forester Chainsaw Safety Chaps? We’ve got you covered – read on below to find the entire list of specs and features:
- Available In Three Sizes – 35”, 37”, 40”
- Available In Eight Different Colors
- UL Certified
- 4 Ply Layer Protection
- Oil & Water Resistant
- Large Side Pocket
- 1 x Forester Chainsaw Safety Chaps
- 1 x 2” Flip Waist Belt
My Favorite Feature: Open-Back Design
- Open-Back design allows for more comfort and manoeuvrability, whilst still protecting at-risk body parts from harm
With an open-back design, these chaps are incredibly comfortable, allowing an easy attachment via two straps on each leg to your existing long pants. These are significantly cooler than chaps that have no open-back design, an aspect that is important if you’re working in hot conditions.
You’ll still be protected from any damage should your chainsaw come into contact with your legs, thanks to the 4-ply heavy-duty layers. Only weighing 1.28 lbs, they are easy to carry and won’t weigh down your legs when working.
Do you prefer an open-back design when it comes to safety chaps? Let us know in the comments what you think of this design.
The second open-back design we’re reviewing in our guide into the best chainsaw chaps today is the 0000 886 3202 from Stihl.
These chaps are available in two colors, orange and blue, and come in three lengths; 32”, 36” and 40”. The apron-like design makes these chaps perfect for working in hot environments. Don’t discount the lightweight design for a lack of safety, though – the 0000 886 3202 is fitted with 6 layers of protective Entex cut-retardant material.
For storage, a deep pocket is added into the left leg, and two buckles on each leg – on the thigh and calf, will allow you to tighten these chaps to your desired level of comfortability.
Is this all the info you need to know about the 0000 886 3202? Definitely not; you can find the entire list of features as well as the important specifications of these chaps from Stihl below:
- Available In Lengths 32”, 36” & 40”
- 36” Standard Length
- Open-Back Design
- Available In Navy Blue & Orange
- 6 Layers Of Protection
- UL Classified
- Inclusive Deep Cargo Pocket
- Weight: 2.59 lbs
- 1 x Stihl 0000 886 3202 Chainsaw Chaps
My Favorite Feature: 6 Layer Protection
- Heavyweight protection in a comfortable, yet rugged open-back design
Stihl have designed these chainsaw chaps with six layers of protection, featuring a retardant material that will reduce the severity of an injury if your chainsaw were to come into contact with your legs.
These chaps have been given the mark of approval from the ASTM, and are UL certified as cut-resistant leg protection. The six layers are cut-retardant material, and being an open-back pair of chaps – are also great for wider ranges of motion when working.
There is also a 9 layer protection pair which Stihl offers; so you can be assured of more protection. What price do you pay on safety?
The second and last of the Husqvarna chaps in our review today, the 531309565.
Unlike the 587160704 we reviewed at the beginning, these chaps are open-back. These are an affordable option if you’re watching your budget, and you still get the Husqvarna quality. These chaps come in a 38” waist – ankle size.
The 531309565 comes in the one color – a blue/gray combination. Unlike the alternative Husqvarna chaps we looked into earlier, these chaps come in a 600-denier polyester count, 400 less than the 587160704. It’s important to remember the price difference when looking at this count.
They can be washed in cold water and mild detergent; yet you should never use chlorine bleach, as this will severely damage these chaps – meaning you’ll have to buy a new pair.
What else do these Husqvarna open-back chaps include? Read on below:
- Adjustable Waist Size – 38” (waist to ankle)
- 5 Layers
- Acetal Delrin Buckles
- 600 Denier Polyester
- PVC Coating With Tek Warp
- Navy Blue/Gray Color Combination
- UL Certified
- Meets ASTM Standards & Regulations
- Washable In Cold Water
- 1 x Husqvarna 531309565 Chainsaw Chaps
My Favorite Feature: Affordability
- At a much more affordable price point than alternative Husqvarna chaps without reducing risk of injury
If you’re in real need of new chaps but have to abide by a budget, it can be difficult to find a pair that are affordable but still high-quality. In this dangerous environment, it’s important you’re safe – however, not everyone has hundreds to throw at new items.
Luckily, you can still be assured that you’re getting high-quality chaps thanks to the Husqvarna brand, without paying a higher price. Although these chaps don’t have the 1000 denier polyester count as the fully covered chaps do, they’re still UL certified, and are PVC coated.
Best of all? Chainsaw blades will get stuck on these six layers when wearing them for protection, giving you enough time to save yourself from danger. And safety is what it’s all about, isn’t it?
Let us know what you prefer out of the two Husqvarna chaps we’ve reviewed, by leaving your thoughts in the comments.
The fifth and final in our guide to the best chainsaw chaps, is the 563979 from Oregon.
These black chaps are designed with a durable, 600 Denier oxford shell – certified by UL in accordance with the ASTM. This features eight layers of protective material – which is exceptional for safety, binding the chain of the saw if you’re to unfortunately make contact.
The eight layers of protection doesn’t weigh the chaps down, as they’re quite breathable and comfortable to wear. If you manage to spill something on them; it’s good to note that these are machine washable, too.
Want the entire list of features? We’ve got them and the specs down below:
- Adjustable Waist Up To 46”
- Adjustable Length Up To 36”
- Color: Black
- UL Classified
- Interlocking Leg Buckles
- 600 Denier Oxford Shell
- 8 Layers Of Warp Knit Protection
- Machine Washable
- 1 x Oregon 563979 Chaps
My Favorite Feature: Adjustable Waist & Length
- Find the perfect fit that tailored for you thanks to adjustable waist and length straps
If you’ve dusted off the chaps after a long holiday season of indulging, only to find that they no longer fit you anymore; not only can it be uncomfortable, it can be incredibly inconvenient. And you don’t want to risk using your chainsaw without them, do you?
Luckily, Oregon has included adjustable straps – for the waist and also for length, to cover all bases; so you can even have a friend or family member borrow these, without worrying about fits.
There are top snaps on the waist, which will adjust the length for you, so your legs will have perfect coverage. The waist adjustability reached 46” – so these chaps are perfect for almost everyone, regardless of your shape.
What do you think of the adjustability function in these chaps? I’d love to hear your thoughts below!
Speaking of thoughts; now that we’ve divided into our review and looked at the differences in what we deem are the best chainsaw chaps available – what’s the best pair to choose from?
Of course, there are many variables to this – for you, it may come down to brand preference, budget, or even the colors these chaps are available in, yet for us, it’s difficult to look past the Husqvarna 587160704 chaps.
Whilst they might be the priciest chaps we’ve reviewed, it’s safety that you’re paying the price for. Full coverage protection around your legs, as well as a 100 Denier Polyester count; it’s worth the extra money for the peace of mind.
